Chapter 17: Respiratory and Excretory Systems
In this chapter, students will discuss how the body rids waste products of metabolism. We will first revisit the cellular respiration reaction and the role of the circulatory pathways to discuss the elimination of carbon dioxide. Students will be able to describe the anatomy and function of the diaphragm, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli and capillaries in gas exchange.
Studying the process of the urinary system, students will understand the primary role of the kidneys is to filter the blood. We can then discuss topics such as the impact of kidney failure, transplants and current research to solve some of these issues.
